Tear duct

Lacrimal punctal/canaliculus stenosis

It is the consequence of a chronic inflammation of the lacrimal punctal or canaliculus. The most frequent cause is chronic conjunctivitis. The patient reports sporadic occasional tearing. It is treated through surgery by opening the lacrimal punctal and, if necessary, placing a temporary implant in the canaliculus.

Tear-duct blockage

It is an obstruction in the upper or lower part of the tear duct. There are multiple causes and the primary symptom is chronic epiphora (overflow of tears onto the face), which cannot be solved with local treatment. It is diagnosed in the specialist’s office and it is treated through surgery (DCR). In the event of infection (dacryocystitis), oral and local antibiotics, besides surgery, are indicated.

Canaliculitis

It is the infection of the (upper or lower) lacrimal canaliculus. It causes great discomfort and pain in the inner corner of the eye and sometimes pus-filled secretion. It is treated with surgery.
