Dr. Martín Charles

Specializes in vitreous-retinal, trauma, cataracts and anterior segment surgery.

Dr. Martín Charles graduated as medical doctor with honors in Universidad del Salvador in 1999. He later completed his residency in Fundación Oftalmológica Argentina Jorge Malbrán, where he was elected chief of residents for two consecutive years. In parallel, he completed the course of Ophthalmology Specialist physician in Universidad del Salvador. He completed the specialization in anterior segment, retina and eye trauma together with his father, Dr. Daniel Charles.
In 2006 he took a teaching course to become a Medicine Professor in Universidad del Salvador. He is associate professor in the graduate and postgraduate course of Universidad del Salvador. He also teaches in the Ophthalmology Specialist Physician course in Universidad de Buenos Aires.

He currently works as vitreous-retinal, trauma and anterior segment surgery specialist, conducting a total of 2000 surgical procedures per year. His areas of interest include cataracts surgery, macula surgery, retinal detachment surgery, maculopathy treatment, clinical research of new drugs for maculopathy, ocular trauma surgery and diabetic retinopathy surgery. Among his passions is helping in the development of new technologies in the surgical field, and is a consultant for Alcon laboratory, Forth Worth, Texas, USA.

He has presented 245 papers, posters, videos and scientific photographs at diverse conferences around the world, and has received 42 scientific awards. He has published 14 articles in specialty journals and books, one of them being a contribution to the book “Ryan, Retina”, Fifth Edition, a well-known book within the field.

He holds three patents for specialty devices.

He is a member of diverse ophthalmology societies, including the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Sociedad Argentina de Oftalmología, Pan-American Society of Ophthalmology, Consejo Argentino de Oftalmología, Sociedad Argentina de Retina y Vítreo, Pan-American Society of Ocular Trauma, and has held executive positions in six of them. He presided over the Pan-American Society of Ocular Trauma. He was part of the governing board of the Pan-American Ophthalmology Association during 2019-2022. He is currently vice-president of Sociedad Argentina de Retina y Vítreo.

In 2012 he was elected representative for Argentina by the American Society of Retina Specialists, a position he still holds today.

In 2006 he founded Fundación VER together with Drs. Daniel and Nicolás Charles with a view to assisting underprivileged people, and opened up the residency to train young professionals at the institution. That same year he created the residency for training ophthalmology specialist physicians. In 2016 he opened vacancies to train clinical and surgeon fellows in retina specialty.

In August 2013 he received the Honor Award by the American Society of Retina Specialists in Toronto, Canada, and in August 2014 he received the Senior Honor Award by the American Society of Retina Specialists in Chicago, USA. In August 2015 he was elected president of the Pan-American Association of Ocular Trauma.

In 2016 and for five consecutive years during the tournament of videos at the ASRS’ Film Festival, where renowned vitreous-retinal surgeons participate to show the best surgical steps to follow in retinal disorders, he received the Rhett-Buckler Award, also known as the Oscar for the best video on retinal surgery.

During the pandemic, he took part in 12 on-line national and international conferences and lectured in 28 webinars around the world. In 2021 he was designated fellow of the ASRS, an institution that recognizes well-respected members who have demonstrated continued commitment with the society, experience in the treatment of vitreous-retinal disorders and the highest ethical and professional standards.

In 2022 he published an innovative surgical technique along with Dr. Aníbal Francone on the International Ophthalmology journal concerning the removal of the internal limiting membrane for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). During the same year, he received the “Best Video Award” in the 15º conference of the Asian-Pacific Vitreous-Retina Society (APVRS).
